BREAKS
Although you wouldn’t find the ideal wave to ride on every beach there are key locations to which those with more blonde hair than others gravitate and these beaches are spaced around the southern tip and the long stretches of untouched virgin beaches of the east. Huge Easter swells pump in from the south across undisturbed waters deep into Bali / Indonesia, the Maldives and beyond.

Between Hikkaduwa and Hambantota, much further to the east, lies the most popular and accessable breaks with the main highway following this costal route providing a drop off to the many breaks dotted at every point. Coral and shallow sea floors, rocky headlands and untold numbers of sandy shorelines claim the highest density of quality breaks. Hikkaduwa is also known for its scuba diving and off shore deeper coral reefs which have mostly gone unprotected. But along this stretch of 10-20kms multiple sandy breaks with lefts and rights peel away that gives everyone and their dog space to catch a wave. Amazingly surfing is not big with the locals so there is little competition for a wave and over the 5 days available in the water we will explore the beaches and breaks through to Matara before swapping our boards for bikes.

The not so gentle but consistent beach breaks found along here is the perfect introduction to surfing. In the words of Charnika, the local lad from Galle who’s spent his years on the beaches selling ancient Spanish and Portuguese coins to tourists collected from nearby ship wrecks “ the waves just never stop and there is always someone in the water from sun-up to sun-set, there is always someone on a board picking up a ride from those long lines of waves” and although he doesn’t surf it seems obvious the beaches offer the perfect location for beginners to learn to surf and have a great time trying!

TERRAIN
The terrain you’ll experience on the mountain biking & trekking portion of our tour is spectacular. Our off-road trails are not exactly ‘off-road’ but they are tea-trails taking you through the most lush and highly priced and award winning tea fields of the world with its rolling hillsides mixed with lakes, waterfalls and bulging ridge lines. Adam’s Peak is a pilgrimage more than a trek and you’ll find devotees, with and without legs that make this staggering ascent up this lone pinnacle. The biking trails are unique in that we have 100’s of interlinking tea estate trails used for transporting tea out of the estates and unintentionally made and perfectly maintained for mountain biking – once ridden you’ll understand how 100’s of years of British ingenuity has created your pathway and not a vehicle in sight!! Our instructors will emphasize efficient use of your mountain bike as we navigate through the hills to the delight of the Tamil tea workers and many a delightful discovery.

BACKWATERS / LAGOON
You will explore the delicate eco-backwaters of Galle with its dense mangroves and wildlife and the likely sightings of huge monitor lizards waiting for their next meal. Just a stones through from the surf beaches of Hikkaduwa it is an amazing change of environment.
