ITINERARY Day 1: Arrive in Costa Rica Welcome to Costa Rica, rainforest paradise! We’ll pick you up at San Jose Airport (SJO) in the afternoon and take a scenic mountain drive to the Arenal area. On the way we will stop to enjoy incredible views, and check out some of the famous Costa Rican wildlife. The rooms at our stylish mountain retreat offer stunning views of Arenal Volcano, which has had active lava flows for 30 years.
Day 2: Mountain Biking Through the Jungle Today our adventure starts full throttle as we head to a private trail for a full day of mountain biking instruction. The Chambacú Bike Trail is a single track trail with a variety of terrains so we can practice shifting, climbing, and jumping, as we develop our mountain biking skills with a rush of downhill riding. The trail goes mostly through areas of jungle that are regenerating thanks to local reforestation initiatives. This evening we’ll visit the Arenal Hot Springs for a relaxing pre-dinner soak.
Day 3: Bike Along Lake Arenal Today we’ll ride a breathtaking route along the southern shore of Lake Arenal, famous for the abundant wildlife (coatis, monkeys, toucans, and many water birds) and stunning volcanic scenery. In the late afternoon we’ll take a scenic boat ride back across the lake.
Day 4: Canopy Tour & Drive to Sarapiqui This morning we’ll fly through the rainforest on cables strung hundreds of feet above the jungle floor. This is the best way to get up close and personal with the abundant tropical wildlife, and the feeling of flying through the trees is unparalleled. After our thrilling morning, we’ll jump in the van and drive to Rio Sarapiqui, stopping for a traditional Tico lunch along the way. We’ll spend the next few nights at a deluxe nature lodge deep in the rainforest. You can spend the afternoon exploring the hiking trails in the lodge’s very own rainforest preserve.
Day 5: Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking Today we’ll continue our adrenaline adventure navigating the Class I and II rapids of Rio Sarapiqui. Beginners will start with a safety lesson and basic skills including self rescue, Eskimo roll and brace paddling techniques. Intermediates who can demonstrate their proficiency in these skills will head down river with one of our guides. The river and surrounding rainforest is the habitat to several different species of monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, river turtles, iguanas, toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers and much more.
Day 6: Whitewater Kayaking on the Rio Sarapiqui Ready for another action-packed day on the river? Today we’ll put our newly-honed skills to the test as we run a longer section of the river with Class II and even a few Class III rapids. Navigate through "Confusión", "Ay Caramba" and "Roller Coaster" rapids and then take a swim in one of the calm pools in between rapids. After a well-deserved lunch we’ll jump in the van for the two hour ride to San Jose.
Day 7: Our Rainforest Adventure Ends After breakfast at the hotel we’ll drive to the airport for your flight home.
Please note: This itinerary is designed to give you an idea of what to expect during our trip but it is not set in stone. What we actually do on a given day is flexible and can be tailored to weather conditions and the interests of the group. | |
